5 ways to be a savvy traveller when you have dietary requirements - part 1
You’ve booked the trip - how exciting!
Now the countdown has begun, it’s totally normal for the little voice in your head to pop up: “What about my dietary needs while I’m away?” Don’t worry, you’re not alone, and you’re not overthinking it.
Here are a few simple, practical things you can do before you go, so you can travel with confidence, feel your best, and fully relax once you arrive.
Pack your supplements and remember to take them
Seems so obvious doesn’t it, but I am frequently guilty of this one.I always pack my supplements, but actually taking them, especially on a short trip, that’s hit or miss. My advice, don’t be like me - if you’ve packed them, take them. They’re in your bag for a reason.
If you don’t usually take supplements at home, it might still be worth bringing some along, especially if you know your nutrition might take a bit of a hit while you're away. I often switch to a multivitamin when I travel. It keeps things simple and saves space in the suitcase - got to save room for souvenirs!
Pack snacks
Are there some grab and go snack bars or drinks you can pack to support your dietary requirements? I am in the habit of packing protein bars or powder. That way if I have a day lacking in protein, I know I have something to top myself up a bit.
I find having these things helps me relax a bit more. I’m not worried about finding somewhere to eat, or being hungry as I know I have things I can grab and go.
Add your requirements when you book booking
Whether it’s a hotel, a retreat, or a tour, always share your dietary needs when you make your booking. It might feel like a small step, but it can make a big difference to your experience.
Giving your hosts a heads up means they have the chance to plan ahead and make sure there’s something suitable for you. The earlier you mention it, the better your chances of being properly catered for, so you can relax and enjoy the trip without any last minute stress.
Don’t forget your medication
It sounds obvious, but in the excitement of getting ready for a trip, it’s easy to overlook. Suddenly you’re at the airport…and your repeat prescription is still sitting at the pharmacy, not due for another week.
We’ve all got a story (either our own or someone else’s) where medication was left behind or almost forgotten.
If you take regular medication, make sure you’ve got enough to cover your entire trip (plus a little extra, just in case), and doublecheck it’s packed before you go. It’s one of those things that’s easy to forget, and even harder to fix once you're away.
Go away feeling your best
This might seem a bit random, but every time I do this before a trip, I always feel better for it.
If you're heading off for more than a week, especially somewhere where your usual routine or diet might go out the window, a little prep at home can go a long way. In the weeks leading up to your trip, try to focus on good nutrition, quality sleep, and regular movement. Think of it as charging your batteries before the fun begins.
It’s not about perfection—it’s about giving your body what it needs so you arrive feeling energised, clear-headed, and like you. A bit of extra care now means more energy, glowing skin, a stronger immune system, and reserves to carry you through those long travel days or buffet breakfasts. Basically, you’ll feel better for longer—so you can enjoy every moment of your trip.
What else do you do to make sure you’re prepared before your trip?
